The New York Mets have released Zephyrs outfielder Ben Johnson, it was announced today.

Johnson has been on the Zephyrs disabled list all season and has not appeared in a game for New Orleans in 2008.

He was recovering from a severe ankle injury suffered in August of 2007 while played for the Zephyrs against the Sacramento RiverCats.

Johnson came to New Orleans in 2007 as a promising outfield prospect, but was unable to stay healthy consistently, culminating in the season-ending ankle injury.

Johnson played in 53 games last season, hitting .271 with two homers and 12 RBI. Despite the severity of the injury, he was expected to rejoin the Zephyrs at full strength this year, but has suffered some setbacks in his rehabilitation.

He had been on crutches for four months after the injury, but had been recovering well going into Spring Training. However, with the oufielder unable to make it back on the field once the season began, he was granted his release on Monday.
